drugs & alcohol - HELP

You didn’t cause it, you can’t control it, and you can’t cure it…

If you’ve ever been to AL-ANON then you’ve heard of the 3 C’s — you didn’t Cause it, you can’t Control it, and you can’t Cure it.  All of these things are very true, but there are definitely some things that parents do that make this problem worse (of course, they don’t mean to make it worse).

Here’s a list of 10 things parents commonly do that make addiction worse.

  1. Using highly emotional communication with your child. (Emotional Enabling)

  2. Not being on the same page as your spouse. (Split Parenting)

  3. Bringing them home from treatment and putting them right back into the same environment.(Not Following Aftercare Recommendations)

  4. Putting education ahead of recovery (School Considerations)

  5. Blaming yourself, your spouse, or “the bad influence kids”

  6. Physically trying to wrestle your kid into compliance.

  7. Arguing with your kid about minor things.

  8. Focusing on the drug instead of the addiction.

  9. Trying to use shame or consequences to get them to stop using.

  10. Making every conversation about addiction and/or recovery.
