1. Loneliness and Isolation:

Many business men are required to travel ALOT.  While it may sound glamorous, it’s really very lonely. Sure, staying in nice hotel rooms in cool new places is fun for a little while, but ultimately it means eating meals alone and sitting in your hotel room watching TV or working on your laptop.  Honestly, traveling is only fun when you have someone to share the memories with.  Business travel can lead to an isolated existence.

2.  Having to Entertain All-the-time!

Business travel means meeting with clients, customers, prospects, investors, etc… This means “Show Time”.  In these meetings, you have to make positive relationships with people you barely know (if you know them at all), and you have to be charismatic, charming, witty, and smart.  This is like having to put on a performance all the time (whether you feel like it or not), and almost all business dinners involve alcohol.  It’s the way that both parties manage the social uncomfortableness of the whole situation.

3.  Being an “A-type” Personality

I think it would be fair to say that most business men could be described as an “A-type” personality.Believe it or not, this type of personality is often more prone to alcoholism.

It’s because they are constantly focused, driven, and pushing themselves. For many people, it gets to the point that they don’t know how to turn it off. They have a real hard time just relaxing, and many of them start to use alcohol it help them.

In these situations, the individual is using alcohol to help them in some way.  In the first situation, they are medicating loneliness and boredom.  In the second situation, they are using alcohol to help them perform socially.  And in the third, they are using alcohol to relax.  Eventually they do this so regularly, that their body adjusts to the chemical and they become dependent.I often tell my clients that the very same characteristics that make an individual successful also set them up for addictions.
