Most people are surprised to find out that alcoholism isn't really about what or how much you drink alcohol. In fact, none of the official criteria for Alcohol Use Disorder mention what or how much alcohol is being consumed.
Getting an official diagnosis of Alcohol Use Disorder is more about how alcohol is impacting your life. There are 11 official criteria for alcoholism according to the DSM-V (which is a manual for clinicians). As listed in the DSM-V, the criteria can be a little confusing, which is why I made this short video explaining each of the criteria and telling you how to score yourself.
I'll explain the official diagnostic criteria for alcohol addiction in an easy to understand way. We'll go over all 11 signs of alcohol addiction with you, explain each one, and tell you how to score yourself. You can decide for yourself if you have an alcohol use disorder.
